Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful and gracious toward their sins and I will remember their deeds of unrighteousness no more.
I want to encourage you not to be conscious of your sins because God is not conscious of them whatsoever. Instead be conscious of Jesus and the finished work of the cross. The Lamb of God has taken away all of your sins at the cross, so you can count on the fact that you are a forgiven child of God.
Hebrews 9:26b – But as it now is, He (Jesus) has once for all at the consummation and close of the ages appeared to put away and abolish sin by His sacrifice (of Himself).
More than 2000 years ago, the sin issue that separated man and God was totally removed and has now become a non-issue. That is why you should not be conscious of your sins. Sin-consciousness brings in condemnation, and the more you dwell on it and condemn yourself, the more you will find yourself unable to get out of your sins. What you focus on becomes more and more predominant in your heart and thoughts.
God the Father has not “forgotten” your sin. He has made a decision not to “remember” it anymore – ever! He says he has removed them as far as the east is from the west. East and west can never meet or catch up to each other. Just so your sin has been removed, never to be brought up again.
“But I know that I will sin again. What then?” you ask.
You are guaranteed to make mistakes in life, but remember that sin is no longer an issue that keeps you away from God. Hebrews 10:12 - Whereas this One Christ after He had offered a single sacrifice for our sins (that shall avail) for all time, sat down at the right hand of God. No matter what has happened or what you have done, God wants you to know that because of the finished work of the cross of Jesus Christ, He will be merciful to your unrighteousness, and your sins and lawless deeds He will remember no more.
There is nothing more you can do to “pay” for your sin or mistakes that Jesus didn’t already pay. Continually remind yourself that all sin has been paid for. You have been forgiven! And the more you count on the fact that you have forgiveness and that there is no condemnation, the more you will have the strength to “go and sin no more”! (John 8:11) And the more your heart will become persuaded of His goodness and mercy for you.
